Situated in the heartland of Devon on the northern boundary of Dartmoor National Park, this special area celebrates the very best of rural Devon. Its magnificent scenery gives clues to its agricultural history as well as revealing innovative industrial activity & architecture.
A walk through the Deer Park, created in the late 13th Century as a hunting ground for the Okehampton Castle, will take you from an Iron Age settlement on East Hill to the modern dam built in 1972 creating the beautiful Meldon Reservoir. Along the way you will pass through ancient woodlands, babbling brooks, deep pools & moorland pastures with mans intervention revealing itself with views of Okehampton Castle, a heritage railway, a wrought and cast iron railway viaduct, mineral mining, limestone kilns and embryonic glassworks tucked away in the secluded West Okement valley.
This tranquil, quiet, historic, unspoilt parkland can be easily accessed by foot (a variety of walks are listed on the visitor information page), by bike (along the spectacular granite way) or by horse from Okehampton or Meldon which all offer wonderful opportunities for car free days out.
As well as information for visitors and local alike, this website offers a host of information on the history of the Deer Park, the stewards of its special landscape and its natural and industrial environment.
